The musical to have won the most Tony Awards is The Producers, with 12 from 15 nominations, including Best Musical on 3 June 2001. Directed by Susan Stroman (USA), with a cast including Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane (Both USA), it broke the previous record of ten held since 1964 by Hello Dolly!.
Both Lane and Broderick were nominated for the award of Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical - with Lane eventually winning it.
The musical is based on Mel Brook's movie of 1968 and he himself collected three awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical with Thomas Meehan.
The other awards won by the musical at the 55th Annual Tony Awards held at Radio City Music Hall were: Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Gary Beach), Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Cady Huffman), Best Orchestration (Doug Besterman), Best Lighting Design (Peter Kaczorowski), Best Costume Design (William Ivey Long), Best Scenic Design (Robin Wagner), Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical (Susan Stroman).
