The oldest surviving hedge maze is located at Hampton Court Palace, Surrey, UK and was built for King William III and Mary II of England. It was designed by royal gardeners George London and Henry Wise (both UK) and planted in 1690 using hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) to form the hedges. The maze covers an area of 0.2 ha (0.5 acres), with a total path length of 800 m (0.5 miles).
Over the centuries the maze has been repaired and replaced with other tree varieties, mainly English Yew (Taxus baccata).
The Maze is a puzzle maze and not a Symbolic Maze with the objective being to find your way to the centre or "Goal" of the Maze and then to navigate your way out.
